GMAT is the dominant test for international MBA admissions - Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, INSEAD, LBS all accept it, with most still considering it the preferred MBA aptitude test \(though GRE acceptance has grown\). For Indian MBA aspirants targeting international top programs or ISB India, GMAT remains the central test. T.I.M.E. Coimbatore offers structured GMAT coaching across classroom, weekend, and online live formats, plus a CAT + GMAT combo track for ISB-bound aspirants. This guide covers the GMAT format, what scores top programs need, T.I.M.E. Coimbatore's prep approach, and how GMAT compares with CAT and GRE.

For the broader picture, see our [GMAT exam page](/exams/gmat) and the [coaching hub](/coaching).

## What is GMAT and who takes it?

The Graduate Management Admission Test \(GMAT\) is conducted by GMAC \(Graduate Management Admission Council\), year-round, computer-based at Pearson VUE test centres. GMAT is the standard test for:

- **International MBA programs** - Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, MIT Sloan, Kellogg, Booth, Columbia, Yale, INSEAD, LBS, IESE, IE, IMD, Cambridge Judge, Oxford Saïd, HEC Paris
- **Indian MBA programs accepting GMAT** - ISB Hyderabad, IIM PGPX \(executive MBA\), some IIM-A 1-year programs, ISB-affiliated PGP YL
- **Some quantitative MS programs** - Masters in Finance, Business Analytics, Quantitative Business at top universities

The current GMAT Focus Edition \(introduced 2023\) runs 2 hours 15 minutes - meaningfully shorter than the legacy GMAT.

GMAT eligibility: open to graduates with no specific subject prerequisite. Most international MBA programs also expect 2-5 years of post-graduate work experience \(executive MBAs require 5-10 years\), so GMAT-taking applicants are typically working professionals or those with significant work experience.

## What does GMAT cover?

The current GMAT Focus Edition runs 2h 15min across 3 sections:

**Quantitative Reasoning \(~45 minutes, ~21 questions\)**

Mathematical problem-solving with focus on business-applicable mathematics:

- Arithmetic \(percentages, ratio, time-work-distance, profit-loss, basic probability\)
- Algebra \(linear and quadratic equations, inequalities\)
- Word problems
- Number system + properties

**Verbal Reasoning \(~45 minutes, ~23 questions\)**

- Reading Comprehension \(passages typically 200-400 words\)
- Critical Reasoning \(logical evaluation of arguments\)
- Note: Sentence Correction was removed in the Focus Edition \(legacy GMAT had it\)

**Data Insights \(~45 minutes, ~20 questions\)**

Integrated reasoning with multi-source information:

- Two-Part Analysis \(component decisions in a scenario\)
- Multi-Source Reasoning \(data from multiple charts / tables\)
- Table Analysis
- Graphics Interpretation
- Data Sufficiency \(also tested in this section\)

Each section is scored 60-90; total score on a 205-805 scale. Verbal + Quant + Data Insights are equally weighted in total scoring.

## How does T.I.M.E. Coimbatore's GMAT coaching work?

GMAT prep at T.I.M.E. Coimbatore is structured around two engagement models:

T.I.M.E. Coimbatore offers GMAT prep across multiple formats designed for different aspirant profiles - working professionals targeting top US MBA programs, ISB aspirants applying alongside CAT, and final-year graduates planning the international MBA pathway.

| Format | Best for | Fee |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Classroom \(3-4 month track\) | Final-year graduates, working professionals who prefer group dynamics | INR 35,900 |
| Weekend batch | Working professionals with weekday commitments | INR 35,900 |
| Online Live | Aspirants who prefer virtual delivery; outstation students | INR 26,450 |
| Test-series only | Strong self-preppers wanting mock calibration | T.I.M.E. national test series rate |
| \*\*CAT + GMAT bundle\*\* ⭐ | Aspirants applying to both Indian \(CAT\) and international MBA / ISB | INR 69,900 \(saves ~INR 6,000 vs separate enrolment\) |

All tracks include personalised 1:1 doubt-clearing sessions with faculty as part of the program - no separate add-on cost.

Duration tracks:

- **Standard GMAT prep \(3-4 months\)** - for serious aspirants
- **Accelerated GMAT \(6-8 weeks\)** - for aspirants with strong baseline aptitude
- **Extended GMAT prep \(5-6 months\)** - for aspirants targeting 720+ with structured foundation building

Talk to the Coimbatore branch counsellor to figure out which format fits your timeline, target B-school, and learning style.

## What GMAT score do you need?

Score targets by B-school tier:

Score targets reflect GMAT Classic \(200-800\) scale; GMAT Focus Edition \(205-805\) equivalents shown in brackets.

| GMAT Classic \(Focus equivalent\) | Typical B-schools \(Class of 2027 published averages\) |
| --- | --- |
| 730+ \(Focus 670+\) | Harvard median 730 \(Focus 685\), Stanford avg 738 \(Focus 689\), Wharton avg 735 \(Focus 676\), Kellogg avg 733 \(Focus 687\), Booth avg 736 \(Focus 670\), Columbia avg 734 \(Focus 690\) |
| 720-735 \(Focus 670-685\) | MIT Sloan median 720, Yale avg 728, NYU Stern avg 737, Tuck avg 727, Berkeley Haas median 730 |
| 700-720 \(Focus 645-670\) | UCLA Anderson mean 703 |
| 700-720 \(Focus 645-670\) | ISB Hyderabad \(median ~710-720 Classic / ~665 Focus\) |
| 680-710 \(Focus 635-670\) | INSEAD avg ~710, LBS median 710, HEC Paris avg ~690, IESE avg ~690, IE avg ~680 |
| 600-680 \(Focus 555-635\) | Tier-2 European + tier-2 US MBA |

\(Class of 2027 official class profiles published September-November 2025. Note: M7 averages have risen - current threshold for top-tier MBA is 730+ Classic / 670+ Focus, not the 720+ historical baseline.\)

These are typical averages. Strong work-experience + leadership + specific industry profile can offset slightly lower scores at some programs.

## How does GMAT compare with CAT and GRE?

| Aspect | GMAT | CAT | GRE |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| When | Year-round | Late November \(annually\) | Year-round |
| Cohort size | International | All Indian | International |
| Schools | International + ISB + select Indian | All IIMs + 60+ Indian | MS/MBA mix; many top MBAs accept |
| Difficulty | Mid-high \(business-analytical\) | High \(sectional-timed\) | Mid-high \(broader academic\) |
| Duration | 2h 15min | 2h | 1h 58min |
| Test fees | ~USD 275 | ~INR 2,600 | ~USD 230 |
| Score validity | 5 years | 1 cycle \(for IIM\) | 5 years |
| Best for | International MBA + ISB | Indian IIM + tier-1 MBA | MS + MBA mix |

For Indian aspirants:

- **Pure IIM target → CAT only**
- **ISB India + tier-2 Indian MBA → CAT + GMAT \(both work\)**
- **International MBA \(top US\) → GMAT primary**
- **Mix of international MBA + MS → GRE primary, then GMAT for select MBA programs**

## What's the realistic score trajectory?

| Starting mock score | After 8 weeks structured prep | After 16 weeks structured prep |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 500-580 | 580-640 | 640-680 |
| 580-640 | 640-690 | 680-720 |
| 640-690 | 690-720 | 720-740 |
| 690+ | 720-740 | 730-770 |

These are typical patterns at T.I.M.E. Coimbatore. Reaching 720+ requires sustained Data Insights + Verbal section discipline - Data Insights is the most prep-resistant section for many Indian aspirants, requiring calibrated practice with integrated-reasoning problems.

## What's T.I.M.E.'s GMAT Mock Test Series?

T.I.M.E. provides GMAT-specific mock series with international cohort calibration:

- 8-12 full-length GMAT mocks per cycle \(T.I.M.E. national GMAT track\)
- Section-wise and topic-specific tests
- Per-question time analytics + accuracy distribution
- Detailed analytics - Quant + Verbal + Data Insights breakdown

The mock series is paced to your specific application timeline \(most GMAT-takers have flexibility on test date within a 3-6 month window\).

## Post-GMAT - application process for top MBA programs

GMAT is the gateway; the actual MBA application process requires:

1. **GMAT score** \(or GRE equivalent\)
2. **Application essays** \(often 2-4 essays per program, 250-500 words each\)
3. **Letters of Recommendation** \(typically 2-3 from senior managers/colleagues\)
4. **Resume** \(1-2 pages, ATS-friendly\)
5. **Interview** \(most programs interview 15-20% of applicants\)
6. **English proficiency** \(TOEFL/IELTS for non-native English speakers, even though GMAT itself is in English\)

T.I.M.E. Coimbatore's GMAT coaching covers the test prep; the full application support \(essays, LORs, interview prep\) typically requires separate consulting engagement.

## Frequently asked questions

### When should I start preparing for GMAT?

For aspirants targeting top US MBA programs, 4-6 months of structured prep is typically optimal. For accelerated prep \(3 months\), aspirants need strong baseline aptitude + ability to commit 3 hours/day during prep weeks.

### Do I need to be in Coimbatore for the GMAT coaching?

Most T.I.M.E. Coimbatore GMAT enrollees are working professionals based in Coimbatore + nearby cities \(Chennai, Madurai, Bangalore commute\). The Online Live track accommodates outstation students who can't attend in person.

### How many mocks does T.I.M.E. provide?

T.I.M.E.'s GMAT track includes **8-12 full-length GMAT mocks** from the T.I.M.E. national series plus section-wise and topic-specific tests, with per-question time analytics and Quant + Verbal + Data Insights breakdowns. International cohort calibration gives realistic percentile signals against the actual GMAT-taking peer set.

### Can I take the GMAT without coaching?

Yes - GMAT is achievable through self-prep with consistent practice and good question-bank access \(Manhattan Prep, official GMAT guides\). T.I.M.E. coaching adds value through structured concept coverage, doubt-clearing, mock series with cohort calibration, and test-day strategy refinement. For aspirants with strong baseline + 5+ months of self-prep capacity, self-prep can suffice.

### What's the cost of taking GMAT?

GMAT registration fee: USD 275 \(test centre\) or USD 250 \(online at-home option\). Indian payment usually adds 5-10% surcharge for currency conversion. Total: ~INR 22,000-25,000 per attempt. Most aspirants take 1-2 attempts; serious applicants sometimes 3+ to optimize scores.

### Can I retake the GMAT if my first score is low?

Yes - GMAT allows 5 attempts per 12-month period and 8 attempts lifetime. Score reporting is selective - you choose which scores to send to schools. Most B-schools view multiple attempts as commitment-positive rather than red-flag \(unlike some other tests\).

### How long does the GMAT score remain valid?

5 years from test date for most B-schools. Some executive MBA programs require scores within 3 years.

### Is GMAT acceptance growing or shrinking?

Stable, but GRE acceptance at top MBA programs has grown - making GMAT less "monopolistic" than it was. Most top US B-schools now genuinely accept both. GMAT remains the dominant signal for committed MBA aspirants; GRE works better for MS + MBA dual-application paths.

### Does my GMAT score affect my ISB chances?

ISB Hyderabad accepts GMAT \(and GRE, and CAT for the YL program\). Typical ISB GMAT admit range: 700+ with most admits at 720+. ISB's full application also evaluates work experience, essays, LORs, and interview - GMAT is necessary but not sufficient.

### What about the legacy GMAT vs GMAT Focus Edition?

The legacy GMAT \(with Sentence Correction + Analytical Writing Assessment\) was retired in early 2024. All current GMAT takers write the Focus Edition. Older scores from the legacy GMAT remain valid for 5 years from test date. Score concordance tables let admissions committees compare across editions.
